Get Involved In Standards Development

Why Stakeholder Participation Matters
Standards are only credible when they reflect genuine consensus. ANSI’s Essential Requirements exist to ensure that the organizations and individuals most affected by a standard have a meaningful opportunity to shape it, not as a formality, but as a structural requirement of the development process itself.
When industry professionals bring real operational experience to standards development, the result is a framework that addresses actual risks rather than theoretical ones. When regulators participate, the resulting standard aligns with enforcement expectations. And when the process is open and documented, the standard carries the kind of credibility that makes it recognized across the broadest range of applications.
Who Can Get Involved
PJRFSI welcomes participation from any individual or organization with a genuine interest in the standards being developed, including:
- Food manufacturers, processors, and handlers
- Cannabis and hemp producers, manufacturers, and retailers
- Third-party logistics and storage operators
- Regulatory agencies and government bodies
- Academic and research institutions
- Consumer and public health advocacy organizations
- Industry associations and trade groups
- Technical and scientific experts in food safety, agriculture, or cannabis
Ways to Participate
- Join a technical committee: Participate directly in drafting, reviewing, and voting on standard language. Committees are structured to ensure no single interest dominates. Contact PJRFSI to express interest in committee participation for an active project.
- Submit public comments: All PJRFSI standards go through a formal public comment period before adoption. Comments are reviewed, documented, and formally responded to. Announcements of active comment periods are made through the PJRFSI news page and newsletter.
- Propose a new project: If a gap exists in current food safety or cannabis standards that warrants a new development effort, PJRFSI accepts formal proposals from stakeholders. Proposals are reviewed against ANSI’s criteria for initiating new projects.
- Subscribe for updates: Stay informed on project announcements, comment periods, and newly published standards by subscribing to the PJRFSI newsletter.
Why Participate Through PJRFSI?
Participating in PJRFSI’s standards development process means contributing to frameworks that are both rigorously developed and practically grounded. PJRFSI’s dual role as a certification body and an ANSI-accredited developer means that the people running the process understand how standards translate into real-world audits and operational requirements. Your input shapes standards that will actually be used, not frameworks that sit on a shelf.
