Changes are coming to CanadaGAP!

A newly revised version of the CanadaGAP Program Management Manual (version 9.2) and an updated CanadaGAP Audit Checklist (version 9.1) have been published for the 2022 season, both effective as of April 1, 2022!

The CanadaGAP Program Management Manual describes further detail about several significant changes to the CanadaGAP program coming in 2022, including:

  • Two new certification options – E and F. (Please note these options are NOT GFSI-recognized.)
  • “Production and Packing” audits for Option C and B group members.

Additional documents updated to reflect the changes in the previously mentioned checklist and manual (likewise effective April 1) include:

  • Self-Declaration and Self-Assessment checklists
  • Group Management System Checklist
  • Management System Checklist (for option A1, A2, C, D, E, and F Mult-Site Operations)

Furthermore, CanadaGAP will also be releasing a new for 2022 Corrective Action Plan (CAP) Guide! This document will provide additional guidance on correcting non-conformances through corrective action or corrective action plans. The guide will include examples of possible non-conformances and sample corrective actions or plans. While not an exhaustive list of potential corrections, the CAP guide may help an organization determine their next steps after receiving a non-conformance.

CanadaGAP was initially developed in 2000 as the “On-Farm Food Safety (OFFS) Guidelines” to meet the needs of Canadian Horticultural Council (CHC) members. Originally consisting of eight crop groups, the certification program was officially launched as CanadaGAP in 2008, consolidating the groups into six HACCP models and six OFFS manuals. As of 2010, CanadaGAP became the first Canadian food safety program recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) for options B & C; today, CanadaGAP is fully recognized by the Canadian government, and is also recognized for GFSI option D.

As a comprehensive food safety program intended for companies producing, handling, and brokering fruits and vegetables, CanadaGAP is built to oversee effective food safety procedures in fresh produce operations. Between its GFSI-recognized status and exclusive delivery via accredited Certification Bodies, CandaGAP’s standard for food safety is bar none. With the flexibility of options for not only individual operations but groups as well, there is an option for businesses of any size or type within the industry.
